Afghanistan, Pakistan begin 48-hour ceasefire

(VOVWORLD) - Officials from Pakistan and Afghanistan have confirmed that a 48-hour ceasefire between the two countries took effect on Wednesday evening, following deadly cross-border clashes earlier in the day that left dozens of soldiers and civilians dead.

The ceasefire came into effect at 6pm Islamabad time, (8p.m. Hanoi time), shortly afterwards both sides simultaneously announced the truce.

Pakistan confirmed the ceasefire duration, stating: “During this period, both sides will sincerely strive to find a positive solution to this complex but resolvable issue through constructive dialogue.”

In Kabul, the Taliban government directed its forces to respect the truce “unless it is violated” by Pakistan, according to a spokesman’s statement on X.

Afghanistan shares a 2,600-kilometer border with Pakistan. Islamabad has accused its neighbor of harboring armed groups responsible for attacks inside Pakistan, a charge the Afghan authorities have firmly denied.
