Lebanon declares national mourning after deadly Israeli attacks

[VOVWORLD] - Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has declared that Thursday, April 9, 2026, will be a day of national mourning to honor victims of the Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

Government offices, public institutions, and municipalities will be closed, flags will be flown at half-mast, and radio and television programming will be adjusted to mark the day of mourning.

PM Salam said he is continuing consultations with Arab leaders and international officials to strengthen Lebanon's political and diplomatic efforts to halt Israeli attacks.

Israeli strikes on Lebanon on Wednesday killed at least 254 people and injured 1,165 others, with densely populated neighborhoods in the capital, Beirut, among the hardest hit, according to the latest data provided by the Lebanese Civil Defense.
