Vietnam’s betel and areca culture honored

(VOVworld) – The custom of chewing betel and areca nut is one of Vietnamese people's fine traditional cultural features in the past. Areca splitting knife, pots of slaked lime, cylindrical lime holders, and betel-trays are among indispensable tools for chewing betel leaf and areca nut. Visiting the Vietnam National History Museum these days, you can see these tools which are gradually fading outof Vietnamese people’s life along with the betel and areca chewing custom.

Draught beer of downtown Hanoi attracts foreign tourists

"Xam tau dien"- street art of Hanoi

(VOVworld)- Xam singing known as streetcar singing appeared in the north of Vietnam long ago. In Hanoi, there’s a unique style of Xam singing, called Xam tau dien, which was performed on trams or streetcars by mostly itinerant blind artists accompanied by dan nhi (two-string violin) or dan bau (monochord), used to charm commuters daily. After 20 years falling into oblivion, the strains of Xam tau dien were heard again in the capital city over the weekends, with a series of concerts at the Women's Museum.

Love for Hanoi and its ancient dances

(VOVworld) - Thang Long – Hanoi ancient dances is the elaborate combination of many cultures, which was an essential folk art in the daily life of the capital city’s dwellers. Ancient dances have disappeared from the modern life. In order to revitalize the ancient dances, artists and researchers have traveled to localities to meet senior artists and seek for historical documents. Our program today introduces artist Le Hong Thang who devotes her life to ancient dances of Thang Long – Hanoi.

‘Gong rhythms of 90s children’ contributes to community culture preservation

(VOVworld) – At the start of this month, the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology and the Vietnam Television’s ethnic language channel held a joint exhibition of items collected by children who were born in the 90s last previous century and are members of a gong group from KonTum Kpang hamlet in Kon Tum city. A 30-minute film titled ‘Gong rhythms of 90s children’ was screened reflecting the thoughts, feeling, and dreams of the young gong players. VOV’s reporter Bui Hang sheds light on the life and culture of the Ba Na ethnic minority group in HonTum Kpang.

Japanese businessman dedicated to cleaning up Hanoi

(VOVworld) – Every Sunday morning, visitors to Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem Lake find a middle-aged man patiently collecting litter strewn on the path or under the benches. He is Ninomiya, Director of the Japanese-invested Ishigaki Rubber plant located in Hanoi-Dai Tu Industrial Park. For over a year, he and a group of volunteer youths have done this simple job to protect the environment around Sword Lake. This week, VOV’s Bui Hang profiles Mr. Ninomiya.

“Think different” – an exhibition of Steve Jobs – alien technology

(VOVworld) - A painting and sculpture exhibition to commemorate the 1st death anniversary of Apple icon Steve Jobs is being held at Hanoi’s National Library. The exhibition, entitled “Think Different,” includes 21 portraits of the Apple Inc co-founder and illustrations of his life and contributions to the world’s information technology.

Hope for AO/Dioxin victims

(VOVworld) – Twenty four patients in the Dioxin Treatment Department of the Da Nang victims under the Hanoi Military Hospital 103 are the first people living around Da Nang airport recently being confirmed to have been exposed to Agent Orange/Dioxin (AO). They are provided with free detoxification treatment using the Hubbard method which has been successfully applied for victims of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe in Ukraine. Today, VOV’s Lan Anh will take you to the Department to learn more about Hubbard method.

Photo exhibition features children’s hardships during the war

(VOVworld) - More than 70 photographs are currently on display in Hanoi, giving an insight into children’s lives during wartime, when North Vietnam suffered from heavy US bombing from 1964 to 1972. The exhibition entitled ‘Children in Wartime’ aims to help the domestic public and international friends to get a better understand of life during the wartime 40 years ago. VOV’s Lan Anh and Bui Hang today take you to the exhibition which marks the 40th anniversary of ‘Hanoi-Dien Bien Phu Victory in the Air’.
